ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of federal laws that require Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) in every state of the U.S. to work with community members and enable their participation in risk communication with regard to hazardous chemicals. The purpose of this initiative is to inform and plan for communities susceptible to chemical exposure. Using a case study set in the state of Kansas, this chapter presents data compiled from qualitative methods using an LEPC survey instrument and face-to-face interviews with LEPC chairpersons as participants from rural and urban counties across Kansas in 2015 and 2016.
