ABSTRACT

Dysphagia is commonly associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and motor neuron disease. This case report focuses on a man with ALS, describing his management from the time of symptom onset through his progression to severe bulbar involvement. Within the case report, this man with ALS shares his thoughts and insights to help readers understand how changes in speech and swallowing impact his life. The authors review the progression of dysarthria and dysphagia in people with motor neuron disease largely through the lens of the individual patient’s experience, presenting evidence-based practice and research to support interventions approaches. Two video swallow examination recordings compliment the case report and serve to highlight the progression of this man’s dysphagia.
