ABSTRACT

This case report presents a child with dysphagia and highlights the importance of working with a multidisciplinary team. This child presented with severe oropharyngeal dysphagia at birth and subsequently received all nutrition and hydration through a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube. The child’s primary carer was actively engaged in her care, but was often a barrier to the progression of her oral intake. Intensive swallowing therapy and multidisciplinary work facilitated the child’s progression to a full oral diet. Important issues are discussed, including the benefits of adapting management as the patient progresses, working with a multidisciplinary team and, most critically, providing sufficient support for the family to allow a patient to achieve their full potential.
