ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the use of technology, specifically social media, and its applications in the religious education classroom. Discussion begins with a brief summary of communication theory, based on the concepts of “hot” and “cold” media as proposed by Marshall McLuhan. Next, discussion will focus on social media, giving special attention to the concepts of digital citizenship (digital native, digital immigrant, digital alien and digital etiquette) and tribal leadership. Then the discussion will move in a more practical direction, offering advice for implementing effective social media practices in religious education and concluding with numerous examples as guidance for the reader.
