ABSTRACT

To recapitulate, we have been concerned with finding empirical support for the competence-performance extension of our model. Predictions have been derived from Eq. (8.1) and tested against the experimental results. One prediction was that performance-factors increase with developmental level as measured by number of tasks passed. This prediction was verified, but perhaps only tentatively. Another prediction was that each 2 × 2 matrix of the logarithm of performance-factors in Table 9 would result in a determinant close to zero. Such a result would support the idea that performance-factors are representable by terms referring to automaton variables associated with tasks, weighted exponentially by a coefficient representing developmental level. The determinants prediction was well-confirmed. Finally, the same information gained from the determinants prediction was extracted a different way by a procedure that “fit” the observed performance-factors with numbers equal to the α log A i ’s and β (1-k j )’s such that αβ = 1.
