ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 considers reality, practicalities and pitfalls in collecting talk data. Some will appear obvious. However, this chapter asks you (as a researcher) if collecting talk is the best approach to answer the research questions. In essence, what do you want the talk data to do? The approaches described in Chapters 3, 4 and 5 show the degree and level of annotation/coding/practicalities required by each strategy. When you have decided on the research questions, revise them, read more and think about what you have read and see if that alters the research questions, methods and methodology.
