ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the level of intensity happening in the therapeutic session. The level of intensity in a session changes depending on who is in the session, what is being talked about, and the intent of the therapist. Another possibility of decreasing intensity is to have family members witness the talk of the other member. Another way of increasing intensity is the use of silence. Therapeutic silence is when the therapist intentionally does not say anything, which can provide the therapist or client space to think. Besides movement, therapists can utilize touch to help move a session forward and increase the therapeutic possibilities. Therapy is a very serious endeavor as people are coming to the therapist in pain. Given the unpredictable nature of a client's communication, the therapist's participation in the theatrics of a session becomes an invitation to improvise.
