ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a few tips on how to get started on the way to shooting and editing decent video. The shift from actual film to digital video, and more notably the astoundingly fast growth of non-linear editing digital platforms, have made it possible for a solo-working ethnographer to shoot, edit, export, and share both short and long videos. These revolutionary changes, however, have not necessarily been equated with a growth in quality among the large mass of videos being made around the world today. The average viewer has no easy way of distinguishing which of the thousands of factual content videos available online or on various on-demand platforms were made by professional ethnographers and which ones were not. The videos that are most difficult to watch are those that show the same thing minute after minute after minute.
