ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 discusses the act of engaging design, including the fears and reticence associated with immersing oneself in a creative process—open, ambiguous, uncertain, dynamic. Design requires an appreciation of play, a free activity without failure that requires an openness to deal with a dynamic (always changing/emerging) process that can lead to discovery of novel and innovated solutions. It also discusses the need for pluralistic skill development that engages the senses, not merely relying on established conventions or packaged processes.
