ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a detailed review of the progress and prospects for enabling people with a dementia to live well at home. It reviews and discusses relevant evidence from the perspective of people with a dementia and in the broader context of the multiple environments in which that person lives. The chapter looks at the main reasons why people move into a care home. Like the disability scholars who advocate for an enabling support system, we are interested in the role of supports in improving 'functional ability' at home and whilst out and about in the community. The vocabulary of enablers, enabling and enablement is used to promote a constructive understanding of making life at home liveable for people with a dementia. The chapter draws on empirical research in order to conceptualise enabling care and citizenship and to show what works.
