ABSTRACT

A multitude of stakeholders are engaged when it comes to restoring forested landscapes: governments (at all levels), communities, individual landowners, companies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), among others. All too often, those deciding to restore forested landscapes are not those having to pay the opportunity costs for returning trees to the landscape. And all too often, those restoring forested landscapes might not have the same rationale and objectives for restoring the landscape as those living in it. This chapter seeks to understand the profile and motivations of different stakeholders and how they determine choices related to what to restore, why and where. It analyses how different stakeholders relate to forest landscape restoration (FLR) and what options exist to better engage stakeholders. Case studies are presented to illustrate the reasons and incentives for stakeholder engagement in forest restoration (particularly large-scale forest restoration and FLR). A typology of stakeholders is presented.
