ABSTRACT

The United States has a robust nonprofit housing sector. These organizations have made significant contributions toward alleviating the country's housing problems. This chapter presents several important and innovative adaptations that are being made by a small group of high-performing nonprofit affordable housing development organizations in the US in response to pressing challenges. Local organizations work within neighborhoods in a single city or in nearby cities with smaller inventories and geographical reach. Organizations must be nimble, not only meeting new challenges and embracing new opportunities, but also realigning their internal organizational focus, operational structure, and deployment of staff and other resources. The chapter suggests that inward-facing adaptations are integral to the survival of these nonprofits and that strategic collaboration has been the norm for many years. Dwindling resources and intensely competitive housing markets have also precipitated adaptations in housing product types, geographical focus, and income targeting.
