ABSTRACT

[Abstract: This chapter introduces a number of introductory concepts necessary for understanding the remainder of the book. Contrary to popular belief, linguists consider the spoken language to have primacy over the written. The main function of the chapter is to promote discussion of the purpose of a spelling system, concluding that in the modern world the main purpose is the enabling of literacy, and thus the facilitation of education. The importance of correct spelling and punctuation is debated with examples showing they are both important.]
