[Abstract: As with many aspects of language, there is variation of various kinds in spelling. Historically, spelling has varied through time, although variants were standardized to some extent by the prescriptions of Johnson’s and Webster’s dictionaries, and the description of the COBUILD dictionary. Geographically, the two main variants of English spelling are British and American, although the differences are not large. A few words may have free variation, e.g. disc versus disk.]
