ABSTRACT

[Abstract: Throughout its history, English has come into contact with many other languages, and borrowed words from them. Words that were borrowed centuries ago are normally regularized in terms of spelling and pronunciation. Unlike some other languages, English has tended not to regularize the spelling of more recent borrowings according to English spelling patterns. As a result, English spellings may give clues as to the historical origins of more recent loanwords. Such quasi-English words have been a staple of the Scripps Spelling Bee in recent years.]
