ABSTRACT

[Abstract: This chapter lists, with explanation and examples, other consequences of the fact that, while English has an alphabetic spelling system, the correspondence between sounds and letters is often poor. These include the fact that phonemic transcriptions in dictionaries, and spelling bees, are common in English but do not exist in other languages. The main drawback of English spelling is that literacy rates are low, despite the fact that teachers spend considerable time in class teaching and correcting spelling.]
