[Abstract: Throughout its history, English has borrowed many words from other languages, their spellings have generally not been regularized to English spelling patterns, and thus the origins of words may give a clue to their spellings. This may however be of limited help to learners, who probably have little idea of the historical origins of English words. A list of spelling features of words from various major lending languages is presented.]
