ABSTRACT

[abstract: The development philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH) in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan seeks to balance equitable and sustainable socio-economic development with environmental and spiritual well-being of the people. Lhomon Education, a secular educational program for young Buddhist monks at a Buddhist monastery, offers an alternative educational approach that is not focused solely on academic achievement and material success, but involves students in caring for the environment and compassionate action in the world. This chapter describes the philosophy and approach that has been taken at Lhomon Education to make GNH a lived reality in the hearts and minds of the students.]
