ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how university students education-abroad experience has influenced the way their think about their place in the world and about what is happening beyond their doorstep. It looks at some models that can help university students situate their own development in this area, and consider how to take steps to continue becoming more globally aware and engaged. Looking back at Shane and his return home from Spain, it's clear that he has become more globally engaged as a result of his abroad experience. A number of studies have examined the impact of education abroad on people's views toward global issues. Researchers Bernhard Streitwieser and Gregory Light argue that studying abroad does not automatically make for a "global citizen," and examined the various ways in which students returning from an experience abroad understand the notion of global citizenship.
