ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore the idea of transitions. One have already experienced a number of important transitions in their life, but the education-abroad and reentry experience transition is unique in many ways. They look at some models of life transitions and how the reentry experience fits into them. The authors address some of the key challenges that people in the reentry transition face and how one can manage those challenges. They consider how one can leverage their transition to explore their own academic, personal, and professional direction. Most of the time, education-abroad experiences lead to some kind of perspective change in the individual taking the journey. In fact, several studies have suggested that students who spend time abroad often adopt a more person-oriented outlook, including heightened awareness of international and political concerns and greater interest in human nature generally.
