ABSTRACT

Although self-medication has been implemented in society, rational self-medication has not been applied widely, especially by people from Surabaya, which may lead to drug therapy problems. Rational self-medication can be shown from the individual’s behaviour. Lawrence Green’s theory showed that behaviour is influenced by three factors, namely predisposing, enabling and reinforcing. The aim of this study was to analyse the factors influencing pharmacy client behaviour in self-medication in an effort to carry out rational self-medication. A correlation between predisposing factors, enabling factors and reinforcing factors towards the rational self-medication of NSAIDs was performed. The results indicated that there was a significant correlation between knowledge, attitude and facilities at the pharmacy towards the rational self-medication behaviour. Behaviour of the pharmacy staff was not significantly correlated with the rational self-medication behaviour. All the factors were shown to have significant correlation towards the rational self-medication behaviour of NSAIDs. Pharmacy facilities were the biggest factor influencing the rational self-medication behaviour.
