ABSTRACT

Physiological alterations induced by the aging process make the elderly more susceptible to chronic diseases, thus increasing the use of drugs which may lead to drug interactions. This study observed drug use and recognized potential drug interactions that may occur in the use of multiple drugs in the elderly. A number of 382 elderly who are members of several integrated care centers for the elderly in Surabaya were recruited. They were interviewed during the period of April to June 2012. More than 50% of elderly people took more than one drug. Potential drug interactions were identified and classified. The total number of potential drug interactions was 122 incidences. The potential drug interactions found consisted of 4 categories, 1 contraindicated, 20 major and 101 moderate. None of minor categories was found. Pharmacists should be cautious in delivering drugs to the elderly to ensure the safety and efficacy of the drugs used.
