ABSTRACT

A decrease in the production of Nitric Oxide (NO) in diabetes leads to endothelial damage, resulting in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiovascular disease. This study aimed at investigating the effect of the root extract of Imperata cylindrica L. (Alang-alang/cogongrass) on serum NO levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice (Mus musculus). Male mice (20–25 g) were divided into non-diabetic and diabetic groups. The diabetic group was treated with the root extract of Imperata cylindrica L. at doses of 0 mg/kg, 90 mg/kg, and 115 mg/kg for 2 weeks. The results showed that the root extract of Imperata cylindrica L. at the dose of 115 mg/kg improves serum nitrate and total nitric oxide levels in diabetic mice.
