ABSTRACT

Drawing on recent empirical research within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Britain, this chapter examines the potential for organisational learning as suggested by the attitudes of management and non-management to the environment and environmental compliance. In background, the concepts of organisational greening and learning are critiqued. The survey results are presented in terms of individual attitudes to the environment and the potential for these to be linked with the workplace and perceived management culture. The chapter considers the private views of individuals, management and non-management about the environment: Their internalised views of the importance of environmentally friendly actions might act as both triggers and supporters of environmental culture change. Within the survey of SMEs, the attitudes of both management and non-management were found to correlate closely with general public attitudes to the environment. Both management and non-management believed that businesses have a social and moral responsibility to respond to the environment.
