ABSTRACT

This chapter explores if the Circular Economy (CE) is a radical step forward or the emperor in new clothes. In doing so, it explores what has changed in the electronics sector over the past 25 years. It includes an industry eco-design case study from the early 1990s, of which the author was a member of the in-house design team. The evidence that the CE is a radical step forward is weak with the findings pointing towards ‘business as usual’. The chapter concludes with a plea to move to sustainable design practices through a collaborative systems approach.
