ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various important aspects of human factors in nuclear power plants' control systems. It covers human performance–related advanced control room technology issues and control room design–related deficiencies that can lead to human error, human engineering discrepancies in control room visual displays, human factors–related evaluation of control room annunciators, benefits of considering human factors in digital control room upgrades and an approach for incorporating human factors and considerations in digital control room upgrades, and recommendations for overcoming problems when digital control room upgrades undertaken without considering human factors into design, and problems.

There are 10 problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader's comprehension in the area, and sources for most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. This will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific topic.
