ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various aspects of safety in nuclear power plants. It covers nuclear power plants safety objectives, nuclear power plant fundamental safety principles, nuclear power plant specific safety principles, management of safety in nuclear power plant design, safety-related requirements in the design of specific nuclear plant systems, deterministic safety analysis for nuclear power plants, nuclear power plant safety-related documents and standards, and problems.

Three types of nuclear power plant fundamental safety principles relating to management, defense in depth, and technical issues are described in detail. The specific safety principles are concerned with the nuclear power plant siting, design, manufacturing and construction, commissioning, operation, accident management, decommissioning, and emergency preparedness. Each of these eight areas are presented separately.

There are 10 problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader's comprehension in the area, and sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. This will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific topic.
