ABSTRACT

A fixed setup—where all your mixing gear is always patched in and ready to go—doesn’t have to be a recipe for always creating the same mix. On the contrary: it can help speed up all the little chores that need to be dealt with, so you can get on with looking for unique approaches to the music at hand as quickly as possible. A mixing setup is like a musical instrument: you don’t want its layout to change too often, as this becomes embedded in your muscle memory, but you do want it to be flexible in terms of the sounds you can get from it.
