ABSTRACT

The chapter offers an overview of the varied effects the People’s Republic of China has had on trade and investment patterns in Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly since it became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001. The chapter explores the sustainability of China’s role as a major trading partner and reliable source of investment and lending for different Latin American and Caribbean nations, and the medium and long-term threats that China’s expanding commercial presence poses for U.S. geopolitical interests, including military security, throughout the Americas and globally.
