ABSTRACT

This chapter describes practice items as the building blocks for part-task practice. It presents several methods of sequencing practice items. The chapter describes instructional techniques explicitly aimed at 'overlearning', such as changing performance criteria, compressing simulated time, and distributing practice sessions over time. It also discusses suitable media for providing part-task practice. In training design, part-task practice is often applied for recurrent constituent skills that are critical to safety, because their incorrect performance may cause danger to life and cause loss of materials or damage to equipment. Practice items should invite learners to perform the recurrent constituent skill repeatedly, carrying out the procedural steps or applying the IF-THEN rules repeatedly. Contingent tutoring requires an instructor or computer system to closely monitor and interpret the learner's performance, and present procedural information precisely at the moment that the learner needs it. Contingent tutoring during part-task practice may be realized by a human tutor or a computer system.
