ABSTRACT

The purpose of third phase of GROW is to help Zara think of ways to bridge the gap between her 'Reality' and her 'Goal'. Some commentators therefore argue that the coach should refrain from making suggestions in the 'Options' phase. Two last points should be made about 'Options'. The first point is that this phase, perhaps more than any other, requires the coach to be non-judgemental. Coachees must 'feel safe enough to express their thoughts without inhibition or fear of judgement from the coach'. Zara should be encouraged to suggest whatever options she likes. No matter how unsuitable they appear, the coach should write them down, without expressing any negative opinions. The second point concerns the wider benefits of 'options generation'. On one level the purpose of this stage is simply to help the student achieve her goal.
