ABSTRACT

Most importantly, students should be given a copy of the 'Coaching Contract'. It explains what coaching entails and what coach and student can expect from each other. The student should be encouraged to read this carefully before the first session and make a note of anything that is unclear. She should also be encouraged to think about what she wants to address in coaching. In the first session, the coach will normally have to carry out some preliminary steps, e.g. welcoming the student, answering questions about coaching, signing the contract and so on. The contracting process involves discussing and agreeing on the terms and conditions of coaching. The 'Options' phase in the first session is even shorter than 'Reality'. The last phase of the final session involves thanking the student for her participation and saying goodbye. The coach should praise the student for her contributions throughout coaching. The structure of a coaching session is not set in stone.
