ABSTRACT

Coaching sessions are underpinned by a coaching model. The best known model in coaching is GROW (Goal, Reality, Options, Will) which was originally devised by Graham Alexander and promoted by John Whitmore. The GROW model is clear, elegant and can be applied to almost any goal or challenge a student may have. In addition, although other models exist, GROW is one of the simplest to learn and is therefore ideal for anyone new to coaching. One of the great advantages of GROW is its simplicity. The 'G' in 'GROW' can stand for an ultimate goal, proximal goal or session goal. At the beginning of each session, the student and coach will engage in an additional phase: performance and progress feedback. This will involve finding out whether the student carried out her action-steps, to what extent she achieved her proximal goal and how close she is now to her ultimate goal.
