ABSTRACT

Preparing to teach is an essential component of successful and effective teaching. This chapter outlines what planning for teaching is and is split into three sections; Short, medium and long-term planning. Practical advice and examples are included throughout this chapter, which starts with what long-term planning is, referring to the term ‘schemes of work’, and its application to Key Stages 3 and 4. Medium term planning includes a number of factors for the reader to consider when producing an effective unit-of-work, or sequence of lessons. This chapter finishes with what an effective lesson plan could include – from effective lesson objectives, to progressive practical tasks, with a number of practical examples used to support. Reference is also made to variables which could affect planning, and advice given on how to prepare effectively, whilst remaining flexible.
