ABSTRACT

Europe has been central in the recognition of the necessity for cultural and international cooperation in the search for quality in mathematics education research. Cooperation is treated by following the path that goes from communication in mathematics to communication in mathematics education and from communication within countries to communication among countries. The communication in Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME) conferences since then has been truly world-wide, with meetings held each year in a different country or region, and it is appropriate that PME-40 returned to Europe once again in 2016, in Szeged, Hungary. PME has annually between 700 and 800 members from about 60 countries, and the goals remain relevant to those of European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (ERME). The chapter focuses on to the importance of open and stable relationships in the Thematic Working Groups (TWGs) in their journey to accomplish the ERME goals of communication, cooperation and collaboration.
