ABSTRACT

Culture can be defined as the norms, behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, values, customs, artifacts, symbols, codes, language, and institutions of a group of people. Some aspects of culture may be tacit to participants, who see the world, as we all do, through the lens of their native culture. Multicultural settings have different cultures living side by side, and qualitative research is ideally suited to promoting intercultural understanding between different groups. Both insider and outsider researchers can undertake this task, with challenges for each of seeing beyond their own experiences and expectations in order to arrive at understanding of participants' experience of their culture.
