ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death around the world. The Global Burden of Disease study estimated that 30" of all deaths worldwide were caused by CVD in 2010, which represents twice the number of deaths caused by cancers. Harmonisation of training in interventional cardiology and training credentialing in Europe became more important as the field expanded tremendously with the development of several novel diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. One of the main challenges that people currently face in Europe is the lack of harmonisation of interventional cardiology training across the different countries. Indeed, interventional cardiology training is largely heterogeneous as training programs are devised and run at a National level, with significant differences amongst them. This harmonisation should be able to fit the national reality and deal with the specific requirements, health strategies, legislation and regulations that govern safe medical practice at the national level.
