ABSTRACT
Laparoscopic excision of the gallbladder was the principal operation which stimulated interest in minimally invasive operations in the 1990s. However, any other type of hepatobiliary operation, be it liver resection or biliary reconstruction, remains firmly within the province of open surgery, even in adult and still more in paediatric practice.
