ABSTRACT

Paediatric liver transplantation (PLT) is a safe and efficacious treatment for children suffering from end-stage liver disease or liver-based metabolic diseases. As a result of the clinical success of the procedure, the overall number of children awaiting liver transplant far exceeds the numbers of available paediatric allografts. In addition to forcing the utilisation of liver grafts from donors that were previously thought ‘unsuitable’ due to haemodynamic instability or other physiologic or anatomic reasons, this disparity has led to the advancement of techniques which allow the use of portions of adult livers for transplant into children.
