ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to indicate some specific examples of biorefinery systems, considering a logic result of evolution from main biofuel factories to multiproduct complex biorefineries. It analyzes sugarcane, corn, oil palm, lignocellulosic biomass, tropical fruits, and microalgae biorefineries. The chapter presents a detailed explanation of each system and describes the transformation routes, platforms, and products. Each case study highlights a particular valorization and integration strategy according to the feedstock and target products. The viability of biorefineries and bioprocesses are directly linked to supply logistics of biomass. The chapter presents a general perspective of logistic concepts applied to biomass supply systems. Sugarcane is typically the feedstock used in the classic sugar-refining case, which has been used in countries like Brazil, Colombia, and India for a number of decades to produce sugar, bioethanol, heat, and power. Biorefinery corn considers ethanol, benzene, toluene, xylene, and steam production using corn.
