ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyses the school textbooks since they play a crucial role as a dominating teaching tool in Poland. They are widely used both at school and for homework. Many teachers and their students follow them step by step. The term "doing a textbook" was coined to characterize the flow of many lessons. The book provides a background of the system of education in Poland between 1944 and 1989 and its political implications. It also gives a general overview of the propaganda goals and their implementation in various subject areas. The chapter focuses on particular disciplines, grouped into maths and sciences, geography, the Polish language, history, other languages and arts, and civic and defense education. Some quantitative analysis and verification of the findings in reference to the aforementioned definition of propaganda have been explored and that concludes the analysis.
