ABSTRACT

Geography in post–World War II Polish primary schools was taught from the 4th grade. Pupils spent two years on the geography of Poland and two or three years on world geography. The main goals of propaganda in geography textbooks were to form pupils' scientific world view and to present the superiority of socialism over capitalism, especially in the economy. Economic issues occupied a lot of space in geography textbooks. It is quite obvious that economic processes are a part of the description of geographic regions or countries. However, the amount of economic data and the way it was presented in the textbooks of the People's Republic of Poland leave no doubt about the political motivations of the authors. The world of the Polish geography textbooks started with the Soviet Union, whether a political or physical map was being discussed. The USSR was presented in only the most positive light.
