ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the analysis of civic and defense education. The main theme of civic education textbooks was the superiority of socialism over capitalism in all spheres of life: political, social, economic and moral. The Act on Compulsory Enrolment for the Defense of the People's Republic of Poland was cited, which inter alia mentioned that defense education was a compulsory school subject. Defense training was introduced as a primary school subject in 1971. Earlier, "military training" with similar content was taught at secondary schools. Patriotic education was established as the primary goal of the subject. It included the forming of a positive attitude towards the People's Republic of Poland and the People's Army, as well as encouraging pupils as prospective conscripts to join the army. The main point of the historical part of the textbooks was that World War II was the cradle of the People's Republic of Poland and of the "people's" Polish Army.
