ABSTRACT

This chapter reminds the reader how the strands were carefully nurtured from the original project until their direction was clear and relevance understood. It draws them together to show how they seem to form a new platform of knowledge and an agenda for future research through design, centred on systematic but also open-ended approaches to resolving complex and wicked problems. The chapter discusses one of the original foci of the ESDinds European Union (EU)-funded project – education for sustainable development – to show how our project has contributed to a deeper conceptualization of the process of social transformation towards sustainability; and of the vital importance of enabling civil society organisations and groups to be able to explicitly articulate, robustly measure and effectively communicate their own intangible but deeply shared values. Transformative learning is, after all, the golden fleece of many disciplines such as education for sustainable development, and organizational change: and we have it as a kind of by-product.
