ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the new way of thinking that clarifies concepts of participation, not just in terms of our own values-based project, and not only across diverse design areas but also across other disciplines that use participatory methods and processes, allowing clearer comparisons and cross-referencing. It shows that the clarification as a significant first step to remove multidisciplinary barriers to the productive building of a knowledge base around participation concepts. The chapter suggests that design is the best field to lead the elimination of barriers. It shows specific connections to several other disciplines. The process outlines attempt to develop a framework for mapping core underpinning logics in the development of participatory processes. Non-discipline-specific literature searches for 'process evaluation' unearthed their important paper, published in a specialist journal entitled Work and Stress. While recognising the importance of macro processes and the wider context, the chapter focuses on implementation processes in each given situation, most immediate problem to be understood better.
