ABSTRACT

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) defines it as: Knowledge, skill, and/or physical techniques acquired through education, experience, training, or mentoring the performer has acquired over time for a specific discipline or activity. Work skills are common knowledge to the craft, there is a level of technical proficiency, often through a qualification process, and there are rarely written, detailed, task-specific instructions. A technician at INL received second-degree burns to his left middle and ring fingers while performing maintenance on a Class 4 industrial laser. Within INL, one project utilizes several Class 4 industrial lasers to fabricate components for various customers. A tradesman's knowledge is passed on through verbal and hands-on instruction quite often through apprenticeship programs, and no journeyman or master craftsman teaches alike or passes on the same information. While an expert craftsman is very knowledgeable and skilled in their craft, that knowledge and/or skill is different from person to person.
