ABSTRACT

The reverberations of the Nazi rhetoric on Europe also reached Portugal and its dictator António de Oliveira Salazar. Drawing on two important primary sources, this chapter analyzes the Portuguese reception of the Nazis’ New Order project. The first of these sources is a report sent by the Portuguese minister in Berlin, along with Salazar’s comments on it. This is the only extant document in which Salazar refers directly and exclusively to this issue, and it demonstrates his interest in Hitler’s plans for the continent. The chapter also brings to light new documents from the German Foreign Ministry, which show that the ministry and the Sicherheitdienst were aware of this exchange between Berlin and Lisbon.
