ABSTRACT

Mass migration has characterised the life style of most people in the Middle East since antiquity. There are many factors influencing the pattern of the present-day immigration waves in the Middle East. Religion has been a main reason for immigration to Israel, and war a main reason for the exodus of refugees from present-day Israel into Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and other Arab states. Jordan, for example, has been torn apart by the conflict between Jordanians and Palestinians, the latter more numerous than the former. United Nations has struggled for the integration of these refugees through an agency the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The educational system of UNRWA remained under Egyptian and Jordanian school administration except for East Jerusalem, which in effect was annexed to Israel. The educational system had an important role to play in the changing attitudes.
