ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the role of the teacher in supporting woodwork. It also looks at how the woodwork area is best managed and discusses provision, looking at woodwork 'sessions' and woodwork as continuous provision – where it is always available. The chapter discusses the importance of really getting involved in children's thinking processes, by encouraging their creative and critical thinking skills. It also looks at the benefits of involving parents and carers. Adult supported woodworking sessions: The majority of settings choose to provide woodwork for time-limited periods to ensure they can have a teacher supporting the activity and also because of the high demand on resources. Some children enjoy the freedom to work more independently whereas other children will need more support, without which they could become frustrated and lose interest. Valuing the importance and uniqueness of woodwork and understanding the rich educational learning involved spanning all areas of curriculum will enhance the experience for the child.
