ABSTRACT

Among many categories of the needy, this paper will focus on those institutions that assisted orphans in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Italy and aims to add to the research on the issue of assistance models for females and males. In particular, assistance models for girls were based on the protection of honour, religious practices and education. Welfare models for boys aimed at preventing deviant behaviour and integrating them into the world of work. Discipline, education and training were provided to give them the chance to work and achieve social redemption and inclusion.
